Those of us living in Japan can’t avoid the risk of earthquakes, but by gaining knowledge and knowing how to react in times of disaster and how to reduce risks in our own homes ahead of time, we can gain a sense of security.

Sonae-Areba-Urei-Nashi - If you are prepared, you can let go of fear.

On March 22nd, Ms Kimura will present a short version of WaNavi’s* Disaster Preparedness Workshop focusing on 7 important steps to get prepared. Useful handouts will also be provided, so please come update your “Bosai (Disaster Prevention)” skills!

In the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Ms Kimura founded WaNavi to support international residents in Japan by providing disaster preparedness workshops and raised funds for victims in Tohoku. Through their activities, WaNavi has been able to share “Bosai” as a valuable aspect of Japanese culture with the rest of the world. In 2013 and 2014, Motoko went on a governmental mission in collaboration with Japanese and Indian researchers to create an effective disaster awareness program for school children in North India. In addition to her work at WaNavi, Motoko also serves as a visiting lecturer on emergency preparedness and Japanese culture at Hitotsubashi University Graduate School of International Corporate Strategy.

*WaNavi is comprised of professionals from diverse expertise, nationalities and cultural backgrounds. With the support of experts in seismology and disaster prevention, they created a workshop that truly meets the needs of international residents. Their knowledge and passion has been shared with various embassies, corporations, universities, international schools and community groups in Japan. Along with various other services that empower international residents to live comfortably and confidently in Japan, WaNavi continues to raise funds to support families who have been directly affected by natural disasters.
