We’ve seen smart watches, Google Glass, Fitbit and Nike+ FuelBand. We haven’t seen Apple, of course. So far these look like interesting niche markets. Everybody’s getting a smartphone, and glanceable data and apps make sense. But what, if anything, makes wearables a mass-market product in the next 12 to 24 months?

QUESTIONS

  • Platform precedes content. Is there a killer app for the existing hardware?
  • Is this a device business, or is there money to be made in apps? Advertising? Shopping? Search? Augmented reality? Sex toys?
  • What’s the real social media play? Status updates, sure, but what about photos and check-ins?
  • Which form factors will prevail? Will wearables be general- or special-purpose?
  • Must we wait for Apple? Or are Samsung, startups and Nike-types going to drive this space?

What happens in a Mapping Session? We tap the collective wisdom of our analysts and other thought leaders in the market sector we are researching in order to identify the most disruptive trends and their relative importance in shaping a market or industry over the next 12 to 24 months. We also examine which companies are in the best and worst positions to drive these trends — which we call disruption vectors — and gain market share and revenue.
