Event description

Description

Saturday August 18 @ 11am we will be celebrating our next Neighborhood Treasure! This time, we will be celebrating Ms. Kate Wright (more information on this wonderful woman, below). After we celebrate her life with a great piece of art from a local artist, we will have a block party celebration. Expect games, activities for the whole family, meet the City departments, FREE food, popcorn, the works. See you then!

Kate Wright, October 1860 – October 1937
• Kate and her son, Marshall, lived with a Minister and his family and together they moved to Monrovia in 1900. Two years later the Minister and his family moved out of state but Kate remained in Monrovia and lived on E. Cypress Avenue. Kate was divinely inspired to devote her life to care for the sick and the poor. Through donations of supplies and labor she built small cottages on her property, where she tended for patients suffering from tuberculosis who had no family or resources to assist them. Kate received no financial compensation for any of her services. She served selflessly for over 30 years and died in 1938. She is buried in Live Oak Cemetery.
