Learning the Basics: Introduction to Data Literacy for Manufacturers

Iowa companies today have access to more information about their businesses than ever before. But exactly what should you be doing with all that data? And how? Recognizing that not all manufacturers have a dedicated team of software developers to build custom solutions, CIRAS has partnered with NewBoCo's DeltaV Code School to develop a curriculum aimed at teaching anyone how to understand, manipulate, and visualize business data in a way that makes the most sense for your particular company.

This four-part program will cover data literacy, working with data, visualization, and dashboarding. The first course will be delivered at 3 locations. To complete the program, the next three courses will be held in Cedar Rapids.

The first course, Introduction to Data Literacy, will involve experts from the DeltaV Code School teaching participants the key terms to use when talking about their data. Manufacturers who attend this four-hour seminar will leave with an improved understanding of key terminology.

Among other things, participants will discover:

  • Data encoding
    • ANSI (Windows-1252)
    • UTF-8
    • Unicode (16LE, 16BE)
    • Binary/Hex
  • Data formats
    • CSV and other delimiter-separated
    • Fixed width
    • XML
  • JSON
  • Binary Serialization
  • Data Access
  • HTTP
  • Request/Response
  • Authentication
  • ODBC (Open Database Connectivity)
  • Access
  • SQL database servers
  • MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport)
  • SDK (Software Development Kit)
  • Data Delivery
  • Manual Export/Report
  • Email Report
  • Save to File Share
  • Web Hooks
  • Message Queue (AMQP)

Classes will be led by Keith Dahlby, software architect at Cedar Rapids-based nonprofit NewBoCo. Dalby builds prototypes and provides technical and product guidance for startups in the Iowa Startup Accelerator. He was the co-founder and CTO of HuBoard, a 2016 Techstars Cloud San Antonio company, and is a Microsoft MVP for his 9th year.

This event is part 1 of a 4 part series, the events that follow this one are Manufacturing Information Technology - Data Extraction, Transformation, and Loading, Manufacturing Information Technology - Data Visualization & Manufacturing Information Technology - Dashboarding.
