Sri-Lankan Kandyan Dance

SAA-uk are excited to welcome Andrea Carileo from Escuela Kandyan in Chile, who will be delivering an introduction class on Sri-Lankan Kandyan Dance!

Kandyan is a traditional dance from Sri Lanka. A richly historical dance form, dating from as far back as 500 B.C, the Kandyan dance practice is strong on foot work and combines soft movements of the arms and torso. This introduction to Kandyan Dance will encourage participants to work on their coordination and explore movement, but the most important part is to have fun and flow with the rhythm!

Andrea Carileo started her training in Kandyan dance in 2007 with Meintje Orsel. In 2011 she joined Kali Dance Company, directed by Catalina Vidales and Lucía Tobar. In 2012 she joined 'Kandyan Malaya', with María Eugenia Vallejos, and they performed and delivered workshops in Chile and in Colombia. During 2017 Andrea Carileo underwent a teaching training course at Escuela Kandyan where she had the opportunity to deepen her knowledge about the history and meaning of Kandyan Dance, as well as investigating how to translate the dance into contemporary soceity today.

This taster workshop will involve warm up excersises with yoga postures, learning basic Kandyan dance foot work and hand movements, before building a basic sequence of movements together!
