Manhattanhenge (Photographing Sunsets)
Tuesday, May 28, 2013 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
Early-bird special of $35 will end at midnight, Tuesday, 5/21/13. Starting 5/22/13 the cost of this Workshop will be $45.
Manhattanhenge is a rare event, occurring only twice a year, in which the setting sun aligns with the east-west streets of the main street grid in Manhattan. Hayden Planetarium describes it as:
“When the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid. A rare and beautiful sight.”
As New Yorkers gather on the streets to worship this cosmic event, you will be prepared to capture this in all its glory. The main issue here is dynamic range and composition. Instead of exposing for the highlights (setting sun) capturing only silhouettes of the surroundings of the sun, in this Workshop, you will learn how to capture the sunset on the grid but also capture details of buildings and cars surrounding it. We will explore the impact of various techniques regarding exposure control, HDR, depth of field, white balance, composition, lens choice, filters etc. to ensure you walk away with impactful images that capture this rare event.
Meeting Point: NY Public Library on 5th Avenue and 42nd Street – we will have a Group Sign and we will meet you at the right of the entrance near the front stairs where there are tables and chairs.
What to Bring: Your camera! A tripod*
Requirements: You should be familiar with the manual settings of your camera.
* The use of tripods will be at the discretion of local law enforcement and dictated by circumstance.
