Description

The U. S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Los Alamos Field Office and Los Alamos National Laboratory partnering with the U. S. Department of Interior, National Park Service, will offer public tours of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park Tours of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park properties at TA-18. The LANL event complements the April 6 Trinity Site Open House located on the northern portion of White Sands Missile Range near San Antonio, N.M.

Tours of historic sites will feature a visit to the Pond Cabin, which served as an office for Emilio Segrè’s Radioactivity Group studying plutonium; a battleship bunker used to protect equipment and staff during implosion design explosives testing; and the Slotin Building, site of Louis Slotin’s criticality accident. Each tour lasts approximately 3 hours.

Requirements

Tour participants are required to be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years of age, able to walk short distances, stand for 30 minutes, climb stairs, and traverse over uneven surfaces.

A proof of U.S. citizenship will be required at tour visitor badging.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship documents accepted are:

  • U.S. passport
  • birth certificate
  • Delayed birth certificate
  • Enhanced Driver's License (only available to residents of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington)
  • Tribal Identification Card
  • U.S. Naturalization Certificate
  • Military Processing Record
  • For citizens born abroad to U.S. parents; a Certificate of Birth (Form FS 545 or DS 1350); or a Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America (Form FS 240).
  • An expired passport will be accepted as proof of U.S. citizenship if provided along with a valid form of photo ID

Prior to the scheduled tour date, all tour participants are required to read and understand all Tour Visitor Information

Registration

Registration is limited to four tours of 25 people each, with start point and end point at the Bradbury Science Museum. Each participant will need to provide a valid current photo identification (state issued I.D., state issued driver's license, or U.S. passport) for tour registrant check-in.

What to Expect

Please check the weather report on the tour date and dress accordingly. Sunscreen, water, sunglasses, and a hat are recommended. Water can be consumed on the bus, but no food or water is allowed on the walking portion of the tour. Smoking and vaping are prohibited.

Prohibited items are:

  • cell phones, cameras, recording devices, Fitbits, smart watches or Bluetooth accessories, except those associated with medically necessary items.
  • non-government-owned firearms
  • Dangerous weapons and explosives (including dangerous instruments or materials likely to cause substantial injury or damage to persons or property). Includes pocket, hunting, or other sharp knives with blades longer than 2.5 inches.
  • alcoholic beverages
  • controlled substances (for example, illegal drugs and associated paraphernalia, but not prescription medication)
  • items prohibited by local, state, or federal law

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, tour staff will have a registration roster for each tour.

Is it okay if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

No, all registrations must match the tour attendees. For this reason, proof of identification is required at tour registration check-in. If you have reserved a registration slot and need to cancel, please contact the organizer with your name and email address to cancel.
