ABOUT

The High School Debate Institute is open to beginner and varsity high school debaters in public forum debate and policy debate. Thanks to our partnership with Hunter College, students will have full access to library, computer and internet resources to maximize debate research opportunities. In policy debate students will work in small labs to prepare files to prepare on the annual debate topic. In public forum debate, students will be researching and writing on the topic areas of the September/October public forum debate resolution.

Programs include lectures by master debate coaches, small group working debate "labs" to practice debate skills, daily practice debates, and culminating debate tournament that ends with an awards ceremony at the end of the institute. The Debate Camp is staffed by New York’s top high school debate coaches, teachers, alumni and debaters. Tracks are available for beginners as well as advanced debaters. Skills include public speaking, cross examination, critical thinking, research, argumentative writing, public forum debate, and policy debate. Subjects include the current policy debate resolution, philosophy, political science, critical theory, economics, history, geography, international politics and more. Students will gain a competitive edge for the upcoming debate season and most important - have fun!Join us this summer to be a Great Debater! The New York City Urban Debate League is the largest urban debate league in the country serving thousands of students and hundreds of schools each year. We provide the best debate education opportunities year round including summer debate institutes all summer. Students of all skill levels learn public speaking, refutation, questioning, research, writing, reading, listening and other academic skills. But most of all - it is fun! We thank the Silberman Graduate School, Hunter College, the Bella Abzug Leadership Institute and CUNY for allowing us to use the incredible facilities and college environment of Hunter College. The Urban Debate League has hosted Summer Debate workshops for several years at Hunter College, because it is an incredible facility. The Silberman School is located at 2180 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10035.

Registration Fees
Summer debate institute registration fees cover the costs of staff, breakfast, lunch, and facilities. We do offer scholarships for students of demonstrated financial need. Please see your debate coach for scholarship information. Students are eligible for scholarships if (1) attend New York City Title I public schools that are active members of the NYC Urban Debate League; (2) participated in at least four NYCUDL tournaments during the current school year, and (3) provide proof of demonstrated financial need. You can contact your debate coach or summer@debate.nyc for additional information. Otherwise, please proceed with payment information which helps us cover the costs of facilities, instructors, supplies, student breakfast and lunch, and scholarship opportunities. Without your contributions this would not be possible. Thank you for making debate camp possible. All payments are Non-Refundable. What's the refund policy?

All payments are Non-Refundable. Credit can be applied to a another debate institute during the summer and/or provided up to 1 year from the date of the event for next summer's debate institutes. The NYCUDL reserves the right to make any changes to the debate institute including times, dates, and cancellation of programming.

The #6 train stops at 116th Street and Lexington Avenue.
Exit subway and walk up Lexington three blocks or walk to Third Avenue and then three blocks to 119th Street.

Going Crosstown: Take the M116 crosstown bus to East 116th Street and Third Avenue or Lexington Avenue.

IV. By Car

Going West (from Queens & Long Island): Take the Long Island Expressway to the Queens Midtown
Tunnel. Make a right onto Third Avenue and proceed north to 119th Street.

Going South (from Bronx & Westchester): Take the New York Thruway (I-87) to the Major Deegan Expressway; take the Third Avenue Bridge to Lexington Avenue and then turn left. Continue south on Lexington to 118th Street. Make a left turn on 118th Street. Make a left on Third Avenue to 119th Street.

Going East (from New Jersey) Via GW Bridge: Take the George Washington Bridge to the Harlem River Drive to the FDR Drive to Exit 19 toward 2nd Avenue and 125th Street and then merge onto 2nd Avenue. Turn right onto East 117th street. Take first right onto Third Avenue.
