MANAGING THE EXPAT PROCESS; FROM SELECTION TO REPATRIATION
You are invited to the MAY 2013 meeting of the Houston International HR Roundtable.
The issues arising from HR supporting international assignments are among the most complex and challenging HR execs and organizations face. Data trends suggest that the failure/compromise rates for expat assignments, while representing as much as 6% of the total HR budget, have changed very little over the past ten years. And attrition rates for returning expats are many multiples of typical executive rates. While intentions are good and many programs and solutions have emerged, the parts never seem to add up to obtain the desired synergy, and in fact, often function in a sub-optimal manner, with the output of the whole being less than the sum of the parts!
The solution may emerge from the answer to a single question: "Who is accountable for the success of an international assignment?" We'll explore the issues involved in the DESIGN of an effective and efficient expat support system, and tackle some of the tough issues of cross functional management, the role of effective tools and support systems, and the accountability for results. We'll take a high level, management systems view, with attention to the practical issues of designing systems and roles that work effectively and efficiently, from selection-preparation through repatriation. We'll take a special look at the latter, and present some new ideas on maximizing the gains from the international assignment experience.
Our presenters will also give an overview of what a "world class" expat preparation and support system might look like.

Brian W. Walker, LPC, CEAP. Brian is the Advisor, Employee Assistance & WorkLife Services at Chevron Corporation. He has worked in various non-profits, school settings and in private practice for 15 years prior to joining Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR) as a Sr. EAP Counselor. This has afforded him valuable nationally and internationally work experiences. Currently, Brian is employed as the Employee Assistance and WorkLife Advisor for Chevron. Brian obtained a bachelors degree in Psychology from St. Marys University and a Social Work degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He graduated from Acadia University in Wolfville, NS with a masters degree in Counseling. Brian is a former board member of Houston EAPA and an active member of various clinical and professional groups. He is the author of Propelled By Purpose and a frequent guest speaker.
Neill M. Carson, PhD, MBA. Neill is a vice president and senior consultant with the Levinson Institute (Boston, Mass), as well as president and CEO of International Assignment Profiles, (Houston). Neill helps managers build organizations and management systems based on tying structure to strategy through accountability. He is also the designer of the International Assignment Profile an artificial intelligence based tool that assists planners in pinpointing the family adaptation issues that are the primary source of assignment failures or compromises. Neill is a licensed clinical psychologist, was a Fellow at Yale University, holds an MBA from the University of Houston, and is a faculty member of the Harvard Medical School continuing education program for physicians and members of the health care team. Neill has directed over 50 national conferences on leadership, accountability, and organization design.

Parking is available at the Doubletree hotel or Heritage Clay Street Parking Garage, 200 Clay, Houston 77002.You can park at the Doubletree hotel and walk across the street to the building – proceed to the 45th floor. Alternatively, park in the Heritage Clay Street Parking Garage – address of the garage is 200 Clay Street, Houston, TX 77002. If you park in the Clay Street Garage, park in any space that is not marked "Reserved." Take the elevator in the Clay Street Garage to the Basement (‘B’). Upon reaching Basement level, turn left and follow the hallway until you reach the wall with the large ‘H’ on it. Turn left and immediately on the right you will see two elevators. Take the elevator to the Sky Lobby (‘SL’). Once you reach the Sky Lobby, turn right and proceed to the middle bank of elevators. Proceed to the 45th floor to the Deloitte reception area – this is the floor where the meeting will take place.
