Description

The Refugee Sponsorship Training Program (RSTP) in Edmonton is hosting a free workshop for new and experienced refugee sponsors that will provide training on the topics of sponsorship expectations and ethical considerations.

This training session will explore a variety of topics valuable to refugee sponsorship, including:

  • Managing expectations: What are sponsors’ expectations and refugees’ expectations of each other and how can expectations be managed to promote a positive relationship & between sponsors and newcomers?
  • Code of ethics for privately sponsoring groups: What are some ethical practices sponsors may wish to consider?
  • Power imbalance: How do power imbalances affect the relationship between sponsors and refugees and how can this be minimized?
  • Sponsorship dynamics: How might sponsorship dynamics be navigated using an ethics-based approach to promote successful newcomer settlement.

Sign-in will start at 9:30 am and the workshop will begin at 9:45 am. Coffee, tea and light refreshments will be provided.

Advance registration is required.

Who is this event for?

This event is for any individual or organization staff/member engaged in the private sponsorship of refugees. While it is recommended for those who have already formed a sponsorship group and are preparing for the arrival of a sponsored refugee/refugee family, all who feel they may benefit are welcome to attend. What are my parking options for the event?

Complimentary parking passes have been provided by the generosity of the event host, St. John's Institute. All those registered will be emailed a parking pass in advance of the event.
