About this event

This presentation will stress the importance of understanding and managing diversity in the 21st century. Diversity will be discussed in the context of key principles and elements of the cultural competence and other emerging models. Of central importance is to help professionals understand a rationale for providing culturally and linguistically competent service delivery, the impetus for developing a diverse and competent workforce, building multicultural teams, and the importance of knowing the dynamism of diversity (including between- and within-group differences), the value of comprehending community stressors and assets, and ways to continue progressing along the imaginary cultural competence continuum. The learning objectives outlined below are generally designed to help participants understand how leadership is related to cultural and linguistic competence:

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to understand and explain:

1. A rationale as to why dental and oral health professionals are working to improve services to diverse populations and create diverse and inclusive work forces

2. The importance of understanding diversity in their respective service areas, and how services might need to be adapted to be more equitable based on social and other health determinants that impact health access, status, and outcome; and

3. Techniques and strategies for promoting cultural competence, maintaining a diverse, multicultural workforce, and ongoing development.

James L. Mason, Ph.D.Dr. Mason is currently the Chief Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for CareOregon. He is the president of OCCAT, an Oregon based company providing comprehensive DEI and cultural competence consultation and training services. He is the former chief diversity officer for Providence Health & Services in the Oregon region. He also directed the Office of Multicultural Health for the State of Oregon. He was one of the inaugural founders of the National Association of State Offices of Minority Health. He was also a senior consultant and original member of the National Center on Cultural Competence at Georgetown University. He has consulted with health systems, professional schools and programs, and related health and human service bureaucracies in the United States, Latin America, and Canada on issues of work force diversity and culturally competent service delivery.
