Managing Challenging Patients: Strategies for Effective Communication

This risk management educational activity will emphasize best practices for successfully addressing challenging patient behaviors. Discussion will include managing the following kinds of patients – angry, manipulative and demanding, non-compliant and drug seeking – as well as patients with low health literacy, limited English proficiency, cultural differences, and patients who are hearing impaired.

Learning Objectives:

This educational activity will support your ability to:

  • Assess each patient interaction for health literacy barriers to effective communication.

  • Apply risk management strategies to enhance your communication with patients when barriers to effective communication are identified.

  • Apply various techniques for educating patients and confirming their understanding of health information provided by you, including your recommendations for treatment.
