Up to 90% of new strategies don’t work the way they’re supposed to – and this is true for both large companies, and especially start-ups. How does this go wrong? How can we make sure that your team stays on track and executes? In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, execution isn’t just ‘following a plan’ – getting things done means making marketplace feedback part of the ongoing planning. Yet many firms struggle to integrate new information without going off-track. We’ve all had the experience of a tight team that was moving in the right direction, and worked for a leader that couldn’t keep it together – learn how to be one of the good ones and make the most of your team and your organization.

Join Columbia Business School professor Paul Thurman and his business partner Hugh Seaton as they walk through key ideas and actionable advice you can take right now to assess your team’s alignment and take steps towards more effective execution: 1. Strategic Alignment – The perennial problem of senior management ‘cascading’ their strategies & plans down the ranks 2. “builder vs. architect” Orientation – how does this strategy differ to your team. The strategy or pivot is too often explained in the terms of those who came up with it, the ‘sellers’ if you will. Instead we need to translate that into those that will act – the “buyers” 3. Communication mis-matches – cases of where this has gone wrong and how it might’ve been corrected. Paul Thurman & Hugh Seaton are partners in The Shippan Institute, a new venture that brings cutting edge, actionable ideas to management training. They will announce their inaugural seminar, “Leadership Communication”, to begin the week of 3/2.

About Paul Thurman: Professor Thurman, a Columbia MBA valedictorian, service award winner, and multiple teaching award recipients, has extensive advisory and management experience helping a variety of governments and Fortune 500 firms realize value from innovative leadership, operations, and technology strategies. He has held senior positions at Booz Allen Hamilton and American Express and has served public and private sector clients on six continents. Paul has consulted both to several government ministries around the world and to many global financial services, healthcare, retail, and consumer products firms across a number of business disciplines.

About Hugh Seaton: Also a Columbia grad, Hugh has spent his career in marketing, management and education, working in senior roles at technology firms such as Sony & AOL, and advertising agencies such as BBDO & DraftFCB. Hugh’s management experience includes over 9 years in China, as well as broader international roles, experience that strongly informs many of the management ideas the Shippan Institute is founded upon. A board member of SmartPoints Technology and the AEC Hackathon Group, Hugh’s experience with start-up management challenges brings a useful perspective to organizations large and small.
