Caravan to Mammoth Lakes via Yosemite (print this out)

Primary Route CA-120 E. to CA 395 south to Mammoth Lakes

Depart Livermore Starbucks – 6:30 am (1/2 earlier than before)

  • All liability forms must be signed, and all must participate in Safety Briefing
  • May have Diablo stickers (removable) to identify you
  • You don't have to look pretty for the drive - freshen up at the hotel
  • Opens at 3AM

Start: Starbucks/Airway offramp: 883 Airway Blvd, Livermore, CA 94551

  • 6:30 Begin CA 580 East – merge with 205 E
    • We may lose a few cars due to traffic light (DON’T Panic)
    • Next few directions contain traffic and we have a meet up point

  • From CA 205 merge CA205/I-5NORTH
  • From I-5N (brief) TO CA 120 E
  • From CA 120 to CA 99 North
  • CA 99 Merge (left lane, caution)
  • CA 99 (brief) CA 120 E
    • Meet up just past exit/offramp – check gas tanks

  • Follow CA 120 into Oakdale
    • Continue to Yosemite – requires a left turn from a left turn only lane to stay on CA 120 (we will meet up shortly thereafter)

Meet up at Burger King, note Starbucks on opposite side of street

Getting to Yosemite’s Big Oak Park Entrance

  • From the Burger King:
  • CA 120East / CA 108 (approx. 30 minutes, 28 miles)
    • Turn right from CA 120/108 for CA120 to Yosemite
    • Meet up just after the turn where safe – stay in car.
      • Travel 50 miles on CA 120 to the Yosemite National Park Entrance
      • $30 fee to enter the park (Save the receipt, if coming back via Yosemite!!)
      • Use ANY entry Pay station (it isn’t necessary to Queue up behind Porsche cars
      • Find a safe place to park and wait for any stragglers


  • Receipt need for exit on this trip to Mammoth Lakes
  • 20-minute stop at the Gate
  • Now patience begins…
  • Leave the gate for Tioga Pass and the Picnic at Lake Tenaya CA-120

    • (optional stop: Depending on time and available parking)
      • Crane Flat Gas Station (where you go left on CA-120, otherwise you are heading to the Valley)
        • 8028 Big Oak Flat Rd, Yosemite Valley, CA 95389
        • May meet up with other regions
        • (optional photo stop depending on parking) Olmstead Point
          • 25 – 26 miles
          • Next stop picnic lunch Lake Tanaya 3miles from the photo stop
            • Challenging parking
            • 30-minute picnic lunch (bring a chair or two)
            • No services, outhouse may be available
            • Depart CA120 East – safe right turn (have Yosemite Sales receipt on hand for park exit)
            • Next stop and meet point is Lee Vining (CA 120/CA 395)
              • Mobil Gas Station 22 vista point, (760) 647-1088
                • Gas and rest room 15-minute to 20-minute stop (congested parking & restrooms)
                • Drive distance from the picnic stop 27 miles and/or 40 mins
                • CA 395 South (CHP will likely be patrolling and waiting)
                  • 28 miles south to EXIT 263
                    • Take CA-203 right towards Mammoth Lakes
  • We will stop where it is safe and discuss plans (Caravan ends)
    • My next stop is the Westin and it may not be yours
    • The Westin Monache Resort, Mammoth
    • 50 Hillside Dr, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546
    • The hotel entrance will tell us what floor is for Porsche Parking

It may be 2 pm when we arrive at the Westin, it may be necessary to enjoy the lounge area.

  • Know your hotel name and reservation number
  • Diablo does not have any formal meet ups at this time – you are on your own to explore. We may likely meet up here and there – explore the town on your own. Call me for questions when in town. I may opt to get some fishing done.
  • Sunday – drive home on your own, you can come back via twisties CA 108 (watch for the Marines), breakfast – gets crowded at the Westin
  • Last note, if you want to eat quickly, there are plenty of choices and the Westin has great food. Socialize with the regions!
