One of India’s most tireless advocates for achieving social change through the arts brings her latest creation to the Freer. In Colors of the Heart: Women’s Voices Silent No More, Mallika Sarabhai and the Darpana Performing Group utilize classical bharata natyam and modern dance, along with original music and lyrics, to explore women’s universal experiences. The piece investigates the violence and exploitation against women and the sisterhoods that empower women around the world.

For this production, Sarabhai joins forces with British Pakistani composer and lyricist Samia Malik. The Telegraph of India calls the performance “a unique blend of voices that speaks of all women, to all women,” while the Deccan Chronicle considers it “another show-stopper from Mallika.”

A multitalented artist and social force, Sarabhai is well known in India for her pioneering work on human rights and environmental awareness. She pursues these causes through dance productions, plays, writings, political activity, and hosting two long-running television programs. Her previous theatrical works include Shakti: The Power of Women, An Idea Named Meera, In Search of the Goddess, SvaKranti: The Revolution Within, and Sita’s Daughters.
