Map Reading Day – Malham
📍 Yorkshire Dales | 🕣 08:30–16:00 | 💷 £45pp or £80 for 2 (see below)
Join me, Will, a qualified Mountain Leader, for a hands-on day learning to navigate using just a map and compass in the rugged n' beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
I grew up walking and running in these hills and know them well. I'll share my tips as we explore using just maps and compasses (and without relying on a phone!) Whether you’re completely new to navigation/map reading or want to brush up on your skills, this practical day is for you.
What to Expect
We’ll avoid Malham’s busy hotspots and explore the quieter limestone landscapes, inc my all-time favourite hill, Pikedaw, the dry valley, and Malham Tarn. A good base level of fitness is required, it's a full day out in the hills so there'll be be some rough and sometimes off-path terrain.
This day is for you if you want to:
• Pick up a map and compass and learn how to use them
• Build confidence planning your own routes and hill days
• Get practical experience in real terrain
We’ll cover:
🗺️ Reading different types of maps, symbols and contours
🧭 Using a compass and orientating your map
📍 Taking bearings and finding grid references
✔️ Navigating using the 5 D’s of Navigation
🎒 Essential kit and what to carry on the hill

👌 Effective route planning!
