Event description

Description

Most healthcare professionals do not ask their patients about their patient’s sexual activity. The reasons most cited are: “worry about opening up a can of worms, offending patients, not knowing what or how to ask, not knowing what to do with the responses, sexual bias, feeling ashamed or embarrassed, not understanding the dysfunctions, ignorance about cultural or religious restrictions, lack of awareness about the importance of sexual function, ageism, lack of time and resources” – Dyer :2013 Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Many do not think of Male Health, Wellness and Sexual Function as a specific area of medicine. Often, men can be in their 30’s-40’s never having seen a doctor. Men suffer hormonal changes without guidance nor explanation of the changes they report feeling. Men experience changes in sexual function and are often told to take the “blue pill” and dismissed. The different phases of a man’s life with sexual and health choices bring specific concerns and need to be understood and treated.

Women are similarly dismissed when they have pelvic floor issues, hormonal imbalances, sexual and health choices. They are prescribed medicines for yeast, sexual transmitted infections and urinary tract infections even when they do not have those conditions. Pelvic floor examinations are painful and incomplete. Adolescent, post partum and menopausal women have specific health and sexual issues that need to be addressed in a holistic manner.
