Event description

Description

Join us in Joshua Tree for a one day workshop on how to make watercolors from sands and cacti. In the morning we'll gather, sift, and grind the sands into refined pigments. In the afternoon we'll learn how to mix the pigment into gum arabic to make watercolors. We'll end the day painting with the watercolors we've made from the sands and prickly pear.

No previous experience required, all skill levels welcome.

Saturday, June 9th

9 am to noon

We'll begin with a history of natural pigments, then survey some of the different color sands native to the Mojave Desert. Then we'll gather and sift our own sand, grind it, and begin the two step water refining process for the pigments. We will also be looking at prickly pears, and how to make pink paint from the cacti.

noon to 1

lunch at the Casita

1 to 4 pm

In the afternoon we'll learn how to mix gum arabic, honey, and gylcerin into the refined pigments and pour them into trays. Then we'll experiment with making our own paintings using the watercolors made from sand. Each participant will take home a watercolor pan made from the Mojave and the tools to make their own paint from sands, dirt, and cacti.

Materials wise, we understand that some of you may already have many or all of the necessary tools, while others would rather us supply all the materials. To that end we are including a list of materials; you may choose to bring your own or if you'd like us to get them all for you and have them waiting in Joshua Tree please add the "supplies" option under tickets in addition to the workshop. The materials are:

watercolor brush We will be purchasing size #3 but feel free to bring any size.
palette knife I prefer the 35T or 6T but any medium to large sized flexible metal palette knife will work.

OPTIONAL Horseback ride through the Joshua Trees

If you're interested, we'd love for you to experience a horseback ride through the Joshua Trees at Knob Hill Ranch, a short drive from the Joshua Tree Casita where the workshop will take place. However because only three to four riders can go out at a time, it makes the most sense to schedule your horseback ride with Knob Hill Ranch directly, either at sunrise before the workshop or afterwards at sunset. NOTE: workshop ticket does not include horseback ride, which needs to be booked directly with Knob Hill Ranch.

Travel and Lodging

For those traveling from out of town, the nearest airport are in Palm Springs, an hour drive from Joshua Tree, and Los Angeles, a two hour drive (depending on traffic). Lodging wise, there are lots of great options in Joshua Tree on Airbnb. Mojave Sands Motel and the Joshua Tree Inn are also great places to stay.

We hope you'll join us in the Mojave in June!
