Event description

Description

Virtually every non-profit organization began in the same way.An individual or a small group identified an important social need and decided to form an organization to address that need. A board of directors was recruited, commonly consisting of friends, family and supporters.
Board members tend to view their role as being supporters of the founder and may serve as volunteers in every area, from financial management to delivering programs.
Once the organization is able to hire staff, however, continuation of this structure can lead to challenges to the board's role as an independent fiduciary for the achievement of the mission, especially to the extent that the board accepts a "follow-the-leader" approach to its role.
This workshop will provide an analysis of these challenges and steps that can be taken to build the foundation for a board that will sustain and guide the organization into the future.

Key Takeaways:

  • How to structure board meetings to separate governance from implementation work
  • The role of the ED in managing the board
  • Creating an effective and attainable committee structure

This workshop will be presented by Michael Davidson, Board Coach

Area of Excellence: Governance
