Making Places: Building with Blocks (for children ages 5 – 9)
Mon, April 17, 2017, 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM EDT
Join us for a morning of brainstorming and building as we learn about the world of transportation planning. After a brief introduction to the transportation field and what transportation planners do, the students will engage in a “place making” activity where they will learn about the “things that go” (e.g., trains, buses, bicycles) in different types of places from cities to neighborhoods to farms. Then, students will work in groups to bring their ideas to life using blocks. At the end of the activity students will have the opportunity to present their place type models. In addition to having fun, at the end of the exercise, students will gain:
A better understanding of transportation planning and urban planning;
A better understanding of transportation challenges and opportunities;
An opportunity to develop teamwork and collaboration skills; and
An opportunity to develop public speaking skills.
Event size: 25 children
Security Procedures: Adults must provide a valid photo identification (i.e. driver's license, passport) to enter the building. Students should bring a school identification card or driver’s license if available. Please minimize the number of bags, and backpacks to help expedite the security process.
