Description

Making Government Work Amid the Discord: Lessons from a former mayor who brought people together to get things done.

Free Public Lecture with Ralph Becker, former Salt Lake City Mayor and former House Minority Leader in the Utah State House of Representatives.

With divisiveness and discord on the rise, finding ways to get things done in government has become not only more challenging but also a critical necessity. In this second lecture of the annual Leading Voices in Collaborative Governance Lecture Series, Ralph Becker will share insights from his experience bringing people together to implement solutions addressing complex issues such as homelessness, clean air, and transportation – efforts which have garnered national attention.

Sponsored by the Collaborative Governance Graduate Certificate, part of PSU’s College of Urban and Public Affairs. This new on-line 15-credit program is aimed at providing current public officials and managers with opportunities to sharpen their collaborative skills. Other sponsors include the Association of Oregon Counties, City of Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services, Metro, Prosper Portland, and State of Oregon's Department of Administrative Services.

Event starts at 5:30 pm with refreshments and mingling. Lecture to begin at 6:00 pm.

In 1985 he founded the consulting firm Bear West, specializing in community planning, environmental assessment, public lands, land use, consensus building, and public involvement. Mr. Becker has a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and a J.D.
