Event description

Description

In this workshop, we will: discuss the basic principles of Universal Design for Learning as they relate to accessibility; evaluate the accessibility of current course materials; and learn easy methods of creating accessible Microsoft Office files at the course design stage that are also time-saving tips for any content creation.

In hands-on activities, you will adapt your course content to meet accessibility guidelines and state and federal accessibility requirements, while also creating a more inclusive learning experience for all students. Bring your laptop and samples of course content (MS Word or PowerPoint, PDF, ELMS course space, or other web pages) for hands-on work. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles of Universal Design for Learning;
  • Describe accessibility standards for students, faculty and staff at the university;
  • Identify common accessibility errors in MS Office documents, pdfs, and presentations, and practice making them accessible;
  • Evaluate their course materials (in a digital format) for meeting accessibility standards; and apply or describe the necessary changes to make their course materials accessible.

Prerequisites: none

Note regarding location: Hosted in the new ESJ training center, room 1103. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) required if you would like a hands-on experience.
