Event description

Description

Ryan K Lindsay - the award-winning comic book creator from Canberra who has written for Dark Horse Comics, Vertigo, and run 8 successful Kickstarter campaigns to fund his own comics - is running a workshop all about getting started with making comics. In this workshop, you will look at how comics as a medium function, how to script and plan out comics, and how to put together a loose and effective visual idea of what your comic can become. You will focus on the tools of comics - panels, gutters, closure, pacing, and composition - and how to use them to make your story connect with the reader right in the emotional well at their centre.

About the Expert

Ryan K Lindsay writes comics.

He has partnered with artist Eric Zawadzki to produce: ETERNAL through Black Mask Studios, and HEADSPACE, with Sebastian Piriz, through Monkeybrain Comics/IDW.

He has partnered with artist Sami Kivela to produce: BEAUTIFUL CANVAS through Black Mask Studios, DEER EDITOR through his own ‘Four Colour Ray Gun’ imprint and a handful of Kickstarter successes, and CHUM through ComixTribe.

He was selected as a participant in the DC Writing Workshop group of 2016.

His other comics include: Aurealis and Ledger Award winning NEGATIVE SPACE with Owen Gieni through Dark Horse Comics, GLOVES with Tommy Lee Edwards in the Vertigo CMYK anthology, as well as EIR with Alfie Gallagher, INK ISLAND with Craig Bruyn, and STAIN THE SEAS SCARLET with Alex Cormack through Kickstarter for ‘Four Colour Ray Gun.’

He’s written/edited analytical texts, including THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS: EXAMINING MATT MURDOCK AND DAREDEVIL through Sequart, and has had essays published in Criminal, Godzilla, Sheltered, Strange Nation, and Crime Factory.

About the venue

Harry Hartog Booksellers' ANU store, 153-11 University Avenue:

https://services.anu.edu.au/files/guidance/ANU%20Campus%20Map%202019.pdf

This Harry Hartog ANU store is located just beside the Kambri Precinct. Please just be aware that it is a very new building, and will not show up very accurately on Google Maps. Please refer to the map in the link above to help you find your way. The Harry Hartog ANU phone number is: 02 6230 0197

There are an array of cafes serving coffee and lunch options close by, and they are all open on Saturdays (tea, coffee, hot water, milk and biscuits are provided by the ACTWC.) The Harry Hartog team are happy to have you place some food in their fridge, and use their microwave, should you wish to bring your lunch.

Toilets are located just outside the Harry Hartog store, just a few metres away in the Kambri building.

The closest parking to the store is an underground carpark directly below Harry Hartog (with stairs or public lift access to ground level. Staff at Harry Hartog can provide swipe-pass lift access from ground level to the upper level of their store, where the workshop will be held.) Due to the newness of the precinct, this car park isn't clearly marked in maps. To find it, drive down Kingsley Street (off Barry Drive) and follow signage to the Drill Hall Gallery/Drill Hall Gallery parking. Follow Kingsley Street straight down to its culmination in an underground carpark and you will have the correct one. We recommend this parking option for people who cannot or do not wish to cover much ground to the workshop venue. It costs $5 for the whole day on a Saturday. Parking at Llewellyn Hall is a short stroll away.
