Description

Making Bananas: Design Pedagogy and Social Learning at a Distance

Derek Jones, Lecturer in Design at The Open University and course chair
for U101: Design Thinking,

Thursday, December 8th,2016
12 noon-2pm (please bring your lunch)
Venue: Room 1.37, Paterson's Land, Holyrood Campus

Design thinking and creativity are emerging priorities in education curricula across the world and traditional forms of design pedagogy are uniquely suited to supporting these. By applying traditional forms of design pedagogy, such as the design atelier, new modes of learning and teaching can emerge, such as virtual design studios. These modes of education are themselves ‘traditional’ forms adapted to new contexts and technologies. When applied successfully they are transferrable to other subjects and domains.

This presentation will consider OpenDesignStudio, a virtual design studio created by The Open University to enable and support distance project/problem-based social learning. Early results from a large scale study of student behaviour and success will be presented as well as thoughts on the difficulties of research in such learning spaces. This presentation may contain statistics and bananas.
