Making a short film for your website

Phoenix Theatre, 4 Midland Street, Leicester LE1 1TG, United Kingdom

9.30-6.00pm

Speakers: this workshop will be led by Colin Savage and Mark Batey from BBC Academy.

About the workshop

This workshop is designed for arts organisations and artists who want to understand more about the processes involved in making good short factual films for their website. It will focus on the practical aspects of how to get the best from an interview, live performance and vox pops; how to structure a story and ways to put together the material to create an engaging experience for audiences.

The workshop aims to:

  • introduce delegates to the process of planning a short film: understanding the story, and choosing how to tell it in words and pictures
  • equip delegates with an understanding of the craft and editorial aspects of filming
  • introduce delegates to the techniques of selecting and editing filmed material
  • encourage delegates to connect with each other during the course of the day and to use the relationships developed to support future activity

Delegates will be encouraged to share their own experiences and work together to build skills and knowledge.

Who is this workshop suitable for?

This workshop is suitable for those responsible for making short films for a website. It is aimed at those who intend to film themselves rather than to employ a crew. Suitable job titles may include: Producer, Head of Marketing or Head of Digital.

We need your help

The workshop will include sessions on filming an interview and filming a live performance. We want to root this filming in the experiences of the arts sector, and are looking for a delegate who would like this opportunity to talk about a past or current production.

We would like this delegate to take part in a filmed interview (discussing the artistic elements of a past or current production) and also to arrange a short (approximately three minutes) rehearsal or performance by two actors, dancers or performers during the workshop. The performance will be filmed and intercut with the interview.  A small budget is available to cover the associated costs and the material can be made available to you for use on your website.

Please advise when booking if you are able to offer this support or would like to discuss it in more detail.
