Description

PLEASE NOTE: This is a week long summer camp held at The Artsmiths in Mt. Lebanon; each class is a 6.5 hour session from 9am to 3:30pm. Registering for this camp includes registration for the full week of Monday, July 24th through Friday, July 28th.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Have you been hearing about the engaging concept of Maker Space and wondering how your child can participate? Maker Space integrates hands on learning with the concepts behind Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, i.e. STEAM! Do you like to tinker or think beyond instructions to make something? If so, then this Maker camp is for you! In this camp, you will have the opportunity to create and make your own awesome creations! This camp will involve all things STEAM! You will work with many different materials and supplies to challenge your creativity. Are you ready to go beyond the project and see how far you can stretch your thinking in this Maker camp?

Matt's Maker Space is the organization founded by David and Noelle Conover on behalf of their eldest son, Matthew, who passed away in 2002 after a nine-month battle with cancer. In October 2016, the Conovers donated $175,000 to Mt. Lebanon schools to start Matt's Maker programs in all seven elementary schools. The organization is now working to bring Matt's Maker Spaces to children throughout the Pittsburgh area.

INSTRUCTOR: Amy Tucker has been a Mt. Lebanon School District teacher for 18 years, teaching 2nd, 4th, and 5th grades. In addition to a bachelor's degree in elementary and special education, she also has a master's degree in Instructional Technology. She has always loved tinkering, building, and making things, and now she does that with her own two children, as well as her students. She has attended several maker space workshops and been awarded grant money for implementing a maker station in her classroom.
