Description

About the class:

Expressing ourselves openly has never been more important. Let’s take advantage of the media’s tradition of printing letters by ordinary citizens, and make our voices heard—in a forum that elected officials pay close attention to. In this workshop, we’ll discuss powerful examples, identify key writing techniques, develop our thoughts, and organize them into cohesive, compelling pieces. You’ll receive constructive feedback in a safe, supportive environment and leave with a letter you can polish and publish. This workshop will focus on letters for publication in Bay Area newspapers, but the sky’s the limit: write to anyone, even yourself.

About the Instructor:

Sarah Rosenthal has taught writing for many years to people of all ages and levels. She is the author of Lizard and Manhatten and the editor A Community Writing Itself: Conversations with Vanguard Poets of the Bay Area. She has a BA in Literature & Society from Brown University and an MFA in Creative Writing from SFSU. She is the recipient of the Leo Litwak Fiction Award, a Creative Capacity Innovation Grant, a San Francisco Education Fund Grant, and grant-supported writing residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Soul Mountain, Ragdale, and New York Mills. From 2009 to 2011 she was an Affiliate Artist at Headlands Center for the Arts. She works as a Life and Professional Coach and serves on the California Book Awards poetry jury.
