Fiction writers spend a lot of time thinking about the content of their writing—the plot, the characters, the setting. However, we were probably drawn to this craft not only through our love of stories, but through our love of language itself. When writing a poem, a poet naturally works with rhythm, rhyme, flow, and alliteration and plays with meaning, metaphor, and structure. These tools enable poets to create pieces beautiful both in content and in language. In this workshop, we will approach our prose with the tools of the poet and with the intent of making our sentencesand our storiesmore powerful through the sculpting of the language itself. We will study and explore examples of excellent poetry and prose, write from exercises inspired by what we have learned, and discover together exhilarating new ways we can make our prose sing.
