Make Your Own Printed Circuit Boards

July 13 - 28, 2019
Saturdays and Sundays, 10 am - 1:45 pm w/ break
6 class sessions total

$300 class fee

ABOUT THIS CLASS

Learn how to take your circuit from schematic or breadboard to a printed circuit board.

A printed circuit board (PCB) holds all of the electronic components and connects them with copper traces printed on the board. Once a circuit is on a PCB, it is permanent and durable. You can quickly make multiple copies of your circuit. You can sell, or give, your PCBs to other people who only need to know how to solder to build your circuit.

It has never been easier or cheaper to create your own PCBs. High-quality PCB design software can be downloaded for free. PCB manufacturing has become so competitive that you can have five circuit boards delivered to your door in about a week for as little as $22.

In this class, students will learn all of the skills necessary to create custom PCBs. Students will learn terminology, technology, and best practices. During the class, each student will create a PCB for a circuit of their choice.

This is an intermediate class for those who have at least a basic understanding of how to read a circuit schematic diagram.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
  • Design Software: DipTrace will be used in class. Alternative software will also be discussed.
  • Schematic Capture: The process of creating an electronic version of a schematic diagram.
  • PCB Design: How to lay out components on the board, including manual and auto-routing.
  • Part Creation: How to make schematic symbols and PCB patterns for non-standard parts.
  • PCB Manufacturing: How to order PCBs from a board house.

CLASS MATERIALS
  • Students must bring a laptop (Windows or Mac)
  • The cost of having PCBs made (~$22) is not covered by the class fee.

REQUIREMENTS
  • A basic understanding of how to read a circuit schematic diagram.
  • Soldering skill is required to solder components onto a finished circuit board.
