Outdoor Design & Technology Making Day (UEL)Hosted by the ITE Secondary PGCE (Design & Technology)
Join us for a relaxed, hands-on DT making day (across 3 days!) at UEL.
Bird boxes will be designed and built over the three days and then installed around the UEL Stratford campus to support biodiversity and foster a greater sense of community and belonging. This project champions outdoor arts and community-based creativity, demonstrating how Design & Technology can connect with nature, wellbeing, and meaningful learning beyond the classroom.
This event is open to:
- UEL DT PGCE Trainees
- UEL students (especially those looking to develop their DT skills)
- External participants (£15 donation towards materials )
What to expect:
- Hands-on making at UEL (materials provided)
- Visit to Walthamstow Wetlands with guided walk and design reflections
- Informal, creative and collaborative atmosphere
Registration:
- UEL students must register using their UEL email via Eventbrite
- External guests can book via Eventbrite
- All tools and materials included – just bring your ideas, a water bottle, and wear comfortable clothes

We’ll begin the day at Walthamstow Wetlands—Europe’s largest urban nature reserve—to explore how outdoor environments can inspire eco-conscious design, sustainable thinking, and place-based learning. It’s the perfect setting for reflecting on the link between environment, design, and pedagogy.

13.30pm onwards will be at UEL Stratford Campus with an introduction to the practical DT session, you will design and build your own bird boxes or outdoor installations using simple tools and materials. This is a great opportunity to explore how Design & Technology can be taught beyond the traditional classroom—through creativity, collaboration, and real-world making.
