Event Details

Join us at Chapter 510 & the Dept. of Make Believe on Saturday, October 21 as authors Chinaka Hodge, Dave Eggers & Jeff Chang engage in a conversation with 11-year-old Chapter 510 poet Aniya Jenkins during Make A Writing Life.

Doors will open at 6pm, and the program will begin at 7pm. Admission is free, but a suggested $15 donation will go directly to supporting Chapter 510's programs.

Come early to enjoy refreshments from Two Mamacitas Pop-Up Kitchen, music spun by DJ XCAIROCITOSX, bookmaking activities, and general make believing in the only magical bureaucracy that sells worry tubes and books written by Oakland youth.

Chapter 510 will also cut the ribbon on its brand new bookmaking studio. Funded by the Abundance Foundation, the studio is set to include a binding machine, paper cutter and all of the hands-on bookmaking tools necessary to create thousands of youth-written books in the future.

Chapter 510 is an volunteer-powered writing center in Oakland that works side by side with teachers and students. We offer free writing programs and publishing opportunities in OUSD schools and at our center, and are currently a part of the 826 Chapter Development Process.

Chinaka Hodge

An Oakland native, Hodge has led a decorated career as a poet, writer and educator. She received the SF Foundation’s Phelan Literary Award in 2012 for emerging Bay Area talent and was a Sundance Feature Film lab fellow for her script, “700th&Int’l,” in 2013. Hodge has worked for the past decade in various capacities at the San Francisco-based literary arts nonprofit Youth Speaks/The Living World Project.

Dave Eggers

Dave Eggers is the author of ten books, including most recently Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?, The Circle, and A Hologram for the King, which was a finalist for the 2012 National Book Award. He is the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing company based in San Francisco that produces books, a quarterly journal of new writing (McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern), and a monthly magazine (The Believer). McSweeney’s also publishes Voice of Witness, a nonprofit book series that uses oral history to illuminate human rights crises around the world. Eggers is the co-founder of 826 National, a network of seven tutoring centers around the country and ScholarMatch, a nonprofit organization designed to connect students with resources, schools and donors to make college possible. He lives in Northern California with his family.

Jeff Chang

Chang has written extensively on culture, politics and music throughout his career. His debut book, Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, won the American Book Award. He co-founded CultureStrike in 2011, an organization intended to empower artists to incite conversations surrounding social justice.

Aniya Jenkins

Aniya Jenkins is a 6th grade poet and activist who attends Downtown Charter Academy. She is the 2016-17 winner of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Festival (3-5th grade division). She has performed widely throughout the Bay Area. Her most recent poems are featured in Dreaming of Spring: Nurturing Seeds of the Imagination, 2017.

Chapter 510 is Oakland’s only writing center for youth and the world’s only magical bureaucracy. We provide in-school tutoring, creative writing workshops, and publishing opportunities for K-12 students in Oakland. It envisions Oakland as a place where youth and their perspectives are visible and teachers are honored and supported. Like its inspiration 826 Valencia, Chapter 510 is a volunteer-powered organization that recognizes young people’s ability to communicate powerfully through words and print. Chapter 510’s writing center, retail store, and community space in downtown Oakland is a dynamic resource for all students, families, teachers, and volunteers.
