Description

Make a Positive Impact on Your Community: A Needs Assessment How-To (one-day workshop for library and literacy staff and volunteers)

To properly plan services, libraries need to know their local population's needs. By the end of class, participants will have completed a basic needs assessment for their community.

The instructor will lead participants in discovering community information that can help with strategic decision-making, programming ideas, grant applications, and obtaining community support. Find existing demographic data from federal, state, and local sources. Use your library's past ODL annual report data to create graphs and charts of your library statistics. Explore existing research about the roles and services of today's libraries. Examine the steps to create a more comprehensive assessment by:

  • Assembling a team
  • Generating your own data through surveys and focus groups
  • Creating reports for community presentations

Although participation in the Edge program is not a requirement to attend, participants will learn practices that will help address Edge benchmark 4: Libraries make strategic decisions based on community priorities for digital inclusion and innovation.

Class Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class.

Amy Brandley, ODL trainer, Edge consultant, photographer, business owner, and former library director, will teach the class.

Travel stipend for overnight stay may be available if public library, library system, tribal library or literacy organization is 60 miles or more from ODL. Initial travel stipend paperwork must be returned to ODL before the class date. Contact Doris Dixon to request paperwork via email Doris.Dixon@libraries.ok.gov or phone (405) 522-3217. Stipend will be based on lodging receipt, up to $92. If lodging charges are less than $92, the contract will be written for the actual amount, not $92. Mileage also may be reimbursed at 30 cents/mile if you are paying for your own gas & cannot collect from your library/literacy organization. Stipend contracts will be made out to the library/literacy organization. It will be your responsibility to collect your reimbursement from such organization. No travel stipend contracts will be paid until the class has been attended and photocopied proof of overnight stay (if applicable) has been submitted to the Office of Library Development.

Classes made possible by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.
