Maintaining Morale and Succeeding in Research During Difficult Times

Friday June 2

12:00 – 1:00pm

685 W. Baltimore Street, MSTF Building, Room 316

The process of becoming an independent investigator is challenging, requiring investigators to balance numerous competing needs, including the need to publish, obtain funding, have time for research, and more.  These challenges increase when the funding rate is low or unpredictable.  Early stage faculty often have questions about strategies for getting funded, including when to apply for funding and how many grant opportunities to pursue.  The challenges inherent in getting funded are also relevant to getting published, often leading early stage investigators to have questions about how many research projects to pursue, and how to find time to write about their research.  The need to balance the multiple facets of an academic research career while also having time for a personal life, can be daunting.   Often early stage faculty are uncertain about how to balance competing needs; therefore, a primary focus of this session is to help identify strategies to manage competing professional demands, while also leaving time for personal interests.

This session will provide tools for identifying short and long term research and career goals, and will also identify resources and strategies that can help investigators achieve these goals

This session will consist of a half hour talk, followed by a half hour discussion based on participants’ interests and concerns.   This session will include a maximum of 10 participants, in order to ensure that all participants have the opportunity to discuss their own questions and concerns. NOTE: Lunch will be provided.
