Description

Join the Hiking Club for this unique New England winter experience!

This trip has been in the works for more than a year and we’re excited to be able to offer the opportunity!

We will be cross country skiing or snow shoeing along groomed trails throughout the 100-Mile Wilderness in Maine. We will ski or snowshoe 7+ miles per day and stay in heated huts fully equipped with food and fun by the Appalachian Mountain Club.

The trip is 3 nights and 3 days starting with a laid-back Friday night in Maine in the Moosehead Lake area. We will drive 30min to the trail and snowmobiles will take our overnight belongings to the first lodge (Gorman Chairback). Skiiers and snowshoers can choose from trails varying in length and difficulty to make their way to the lodge for a killer party or relaxation-station on Saturday night. The same will be true for Sunday morning as we head to the Little Lyford Lodge.

Trip costs cover: transportation, Airbnb on Friday, lodging in AMC bunkhouses Sat. & Sun., all meals from dinner Saturday night through lunch on Monday, gear shuttling fees, and tips for hut crews.

Trip costs DON'T cover: gear rental if-needed, meals Friday, breakfast or lunch Saturday

Physicality of Trip:

The trip entails an average of 7-miles minimum per day on skis or snowshoes. Participants should have confidence in their ability to cover these distances. The terrain is not mountainous, the strenuousness is not based on altitude change, but it will be cold and hilly. The trails are maintained so we won’t be breaking trail, which will make it easier as well.

Gear Needs: (Comprehensive list shared following ticket purchase)

Skis/snowshoes: You NEED cross-country skis or snowshoes for the trip. If you don’t own them, they’re available for low-cost from the Harvard Outing Club or for rent from Northwoods Outfitters in Greenville, ME (where our AirBnb is). Rentals must be reserved prior to the trip.

Sleepingbag: All participants will need their own sleeping bag for the huts. They're heated, but you'll still want a bag for cold weather.

Clothes and footwear: Winter outdoor clothing is necessary. Wool or synthetic socks. Waterproof/windproof layers. Gloves, hat, face mask/balaclava. Winter boots/comfortable/warm shoes are needed for hanging out at the huts.

(Back)Packs: Participants will need a daypack (this can be small or medium size) to keep snacks, lunch, extra clothing layers, etc. with them during the day. Another pack will be needed to keep your change of clothes, boots, toiletries, alcohol, etc.

Transportation: We will using a Google spreadsheet to coordinate cars. Departure times will vary depending on what time your car wants to arrive. A sign-up sheet will be sent out closer to the trip date.
