Maimonides Medical Center

Fifth Annual Nursing Research Conference

November 16, 2017

Taking Action: Social Justice in Healthcare

Maimonides Medical Center will hold its Fifth Annual Nursing Research Conference on

November 16, 2017 at the Plymouth Church, 57 Orange Street, Brooklyn, NY.

Conference Theme:

The Plymouth Church was established in 1850 and was a haven for runaway slaves passing through New York on the Underground Railroad. Henry Ward Beecher, the first preacher of the Plymouth Church, fought fiercely against slavery and anchored a tradition and culture for church members to support and take action against the inequalities and social injustice in this country. Keeping with that tradition today, the New Abolitionists of the Plymouth Church of the 21st century are fighting to combat Human Trafficking which they deem a modern form of slavery.

The conference theme is designed to explore how nurses can impact social injustices related to health and healthcare at the local, state, national, and international levels. We are seeking presentation abstracts supporting the conference theme including but not limited to interventions, reforms, and structural systems change related to:

  • Health inequity based on age, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, etc.
  • Social determinants of health
  • Social and political forces effecting health
  • Perspectives on social policy and practice
  • Ethics and morality
  • Population health
  • Healthcare economics
  • Policy research
  • Disparities in healthcare delivery
