Event description

Description

On Wednesday, June 22, spend the evening learning to play (or playing, if you're an experienced maven) the well-known Jewish tile game, mahj jong. This game of strategy and socializing is making a resurgence among all genders, ages 12 to 120!

The evening will start with a short, light-hearted, but deeply moving documentary about women who play this centuries-old game. The film explores the shared experiences of the players and their families, and chronicles the very social aspect of the game - food, camaraderie, gossip, and most importantly, the life-long bonds that form between its players.

The Baltimore/Washington area’s only certified mahj jong instructor, our very own Marc Wernick, will teach the basics of the game. Experienced players are invited to come and play in a separate parlor. You will come away not only knowing your “cracks” from your “bams,” but you will also be convinced that mahj jong is not just a game, it is a lifestyle.

$10 admission covers snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. An honor bar will be available.

Caution: this night will be only be vaguely reminiscent of our Bubbe's (grandmother's) game.
