When larger society debates about climate change it is usually lives in between two poles: inevitable suffering and fancy technology that might save us. At the California Native Garden Foundation, we believe community and our capacity to care for each other and the land is our greatest opportunity.

On the 2nd Sunday for the next three months (October 9, November 13 & December 11), at our ELSEE teaching garden, we will host local experts on many different sources of ecological wisdom including:

Local Indigenous knowlege with Patrick Orozco, Leader of the Pajaro Valley Ohlone Indian Council, and Antonio (Tonio) Moreno, member of the PVOIC. They will be demonstrating their culture through songs, stories, and talks about native food plants and animals.

The painting you see below is called First Contact. In 2014, Tonio was commissioned by the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation to answer the question: "What was the impact of the Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition of 1775-1776 on the native peoples it came in contact with?" The mission of the expedition was to settle the peninsula. Tonio, along with fellow collaborating native artists, painted this powerful depiction.

The exhibition contains three addtional panels that journey from first contact thorugh the mission era and to the present day. They are owned by the CIHC Foundation and will eventully be homed at the future California Indian Heritage Center.

For the December event, we will also be featuring Ruth Orta, a local indigenous grandmother will be teaching us to process acorns.

We will also be serving organic, local foods brunch & lunch.
