For a brief time during minus tides, the hidden mysteries of the reef are revealed. Join us for an exploration of the intertidal zone as we discover giant green anemones, ochre stars, purple sea urchins, and various species of crabs. Hopefully, we will also come across tiny, beautiful nudibranchs.

Instructed by Wendy Dreskin

-Youth, ages 12 and up, are welcome with adult supervision.

-This will be a vigorous activity.

-If you have any special circumstances or questions, please contact us at fieldinstitute@ptreyes.org.

Class Cancelation Policy

If a registered participant wishes to cancel their enrollment and receive a refund, notification must be received at least 14 days in advance of the class date. No refunds will be issued for enrollment cancellations made less than 14 days in advance of the class date. Class enrollment fees are non-transferable. PNRSA Field Institute classes are generally run rain or shine, though will follow National Park Service weather and road advisories to ensure that classes only run in safe conditions. In the event that the PRNSA Field Institute cancels a class for any reason, participants will receive a full refund of class fees.

What to Bring

Warm, variable-weather, layered clothing (waterproof windbreaker or rain jacket, hat, gloves)

Hat and sunscreen

Daypack

Lunch, snacks, and water for the day

hiking pole for balance (optional)

Hand lens/magnifying glass (optional, instructor will have some)

Everyone has their own idea of footgear for a minus tide. If you choose high rubber boots, be sure they have good tread. Salt water will ruin leather boots so hiking boots are not recommended. The instructor prefers neoprene socks and old running shoes with tread. Some people use wetsuit booties.

Dry socks/pants/shoes to change to after class if needed (highly recommended!).
