Mads Tolling and Frank Martin premier Brazilian Jungle exploring the different sides of Brazilian music!

About this Event

Enjoy Brazilian music from the oldest forms, all the way from choro and samba through bossa nova to modern day. Music by Edu Lobo, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Egberto Gismonti and many more. Joining them is Guest Flutist Carol Alban.

Mads Tolling is a two-time Grammy Award Winner and the 2016 Winner of The DownBeat Critics Rising Star Poll for the violin. As a former nine-year member of both Turtle Island Quartet and bassist Stanley Clarke's band, Mads has spent most his professional life touring internationally. Since 2007 he has lead his own groups, Mads Tolling Trio & Mads Tolling Quartet. The Playmaker released in the fall of 2009, features Stanley Clarke, Russell Ferrante & Stefon Harris. Most recently Mads has released the album, Mads Tolling & The Mads Men - Playing the 60s, which hit top 5 on the US jazz radio charts. Mads has been featured on NPR's Morning Edition, and his recordings have received rave reviews in Downbeat Magazine, Strings Magazine, Washington Post and San Francisco Chronicle. He has performed with Chick Corea, Ramsey Lewis, Kenny Barron, Paquito D'Rivera and Sergio & Odair Assad.

In 2014 Mads received a commission from maestro Michael Morgan to compose a violin concerto for Oakland Symphony Orchestra. Mads premiered the piece in 2015 with Morgan to much fanfare at the Paramount Theatre. Performances in Bear Valley, Santa Rosa and in Japan have followed.

Pianist Frank Martin has been a long-time member of Sting’s “Rainforest Band” and the Brazilian Flora Purim & Airto’s band. He has worked with everybody from Stevie Wonder and Al Jarreau to BB King and Carlos Santana. Frank is long time North California resident, and he continues to be a creative force in the Bay Area. Frank was one of the first musicians Mads collaborated with, when he moved to the Bay Area. He recorded on an album that Frank produced back in 2004, and the two have since worked much together.

 

Flutists Carol Alban has performed at the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Yoshi’s to name a few! Carol is the Founder of The Orinda Jazz Festival which celebrates its 10th Year Anniversary. She has Produced many Benefit Concerts raising Funds and Awareness for both local and global causes and organizations!
