About this Event

In order for user experience design to take its rightful place in your organization’s efforts, you can’t treat your product development  process as if it were a roller coaster, passively riding its hills and valleys.  For knowledge and appreciation of design to increase in your organization, it has to start with you.

By using the principles of integration, communication, flexibility, transparency, and respect, your organization can consistently create unique and amazing user experiences that last. Integration is developing real partnerships with your team - figuring out where your skills and responsibilities overlap with each of them, and using that commonality to help build and stretch their knowledge base. Over-communicate, and recognize that that includes listening, too. Over-listen: find out what your team’s needs and challenges are. Be flexible: for instance, if your team calls for a focus group, don’t get stuck on the limitations of that technique - figure out how to get user intelligence through that exercise. Be transparent about your work and processes: for example, drawing with stakeholders gives them an eye-opening view into the creative process. Finally, overarching these principles is respect for your fellow teammates.

Following on and extending their IxD12 talk on design process, Christina Persson and Joan Vermette will use real world experiences to show these principles at work and provide tools to clear the path for design and usability in your organization and create lasting cultural change.
