Description

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, Hip-Hop Education Center, and SVA Theatre present the Hip-Hop Film Series.

Menace II Society (1993)

Directed by The Hughes Brothers

“More acutely than any movie before, it gives cinematic expression to the hot-tempered, defiantly nihilistic ethos that ignites gangster rap.” – Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Following the life of Watts district teenagers Caine (Tyrin Turner) and O-Dog (Larenz Tate), this debut feature from the Hughes Brothers, then notable music video directors, tracks the attempts to escape the oppressive cycles plaguing black society in 1990s Los Angeles. Set to the era’s fast paced and wildly expressive west-coast rap, the film channels the characters’ angst to reveal what it was like growing up young, poor, and black in the 90s.

Hip-Hop Education Center founder Martha Diaz will introduce the screening.

Menace II Society is rated R and runs 97 minutes. Children under the age of 8 may not be admitted.

Doors will open approximately 30-45 minutes prior to the event. Seating is general admission.
