Event description
Join NJ Watershed Ambassador Denise to learn about macroinvertebrates and how they are used to monitor the health of Jenny Jump Brook.

About this event

Participants will learn about the lives of the tiny “bug” creatures that are often overlooked in streams and rivers — aquatic macroinvertebrates. This educational outdoor training gives an overview of what aquatic macroinvertebrates are, how to identify them, and their importance to streams and rivers. Afterward, participants will be able to have a hands-on opportunity to get into the stream and to collect and identify the macroinvertebrates found in Jenny Jump Brook. We will take on the role of community stream scientists using our macroinvertebrate findings to determine the health of the stream. This training will be an introduction to the starting of an annual community monitoring program of Mountain Lake and open to all who are interested in participating.

Participants should bring a camping chair or picnic blanket to sit on for the start of the program. Then participants should bring waterproof rain boots or footwear they do not mind getting wet or dirty for when we get into the stream. A dry change of clothes for afterward is also recommended.
