The annual Macquarie University Ancient History Teachers Conference & Study of Religion Teachers Conference is a blockbuster event at the Australian National Maritime Museum with a welcome soirée at the Powerhouse Museum the night before.

The Soiree is at 6pm on the 31st at the Powerhouse Museum and features a guided tour and a presentation on how to read a coffin.

The Teachers Conference, comprising both Ancient HIstory and Studies of Religion streams is from 8:30 to 4:30 on Saturday, 1 April.

It coincides with the launch of the Maritime Museum’s new exhibition:

ESCAPE FROM POMPEII: THE UNTOLD ROMAN RESCUE

The focus of the Saturday Conference sessions is on recent academic developments including Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Ethics of Handling Human Remains, and seven other key topics in the Ancient History & SoR syllabi. The exciting line-up of speakers includes Macquarie’s new Professor of Roman History: Professor Ray Laurence, author, inter alia, of Pompeii: The Living City (with A. Butterworth 2005), Roman Pompeii: Space and Society (2006), Roman Passions: A History of Pleasure in Imperial Rome (2010) and Roman Archaeology for Historians (2012).

On Friday, the catered ‘Soirée with the Mummies’ includes a short presentation on “How to read an Egyptian coffin” and a guided tour of the exhibition: EGYPTIAN MUMMIES: EXPLORING ANCIENT LIVES.

Participation in the both the friday soireee and the saturday conference is NESA accredited.
