Event description

Description

Brian McLaren is a renowned author, speaker, activist, and public theologian. A former college English teacher and pastor, he is a passionate advocate for “a new kind of Christianity” – just, generous, and working with people of all faiths for the common good. The author of many books, his most recent is The Great Spiritual Debate (2016), although that has been followed by a rewrite of one of his earlier books, now as a devotional called Seeking Aliveness (2017). His public speaking covers a broad range of topics including postmodern thought and culture, Biblical studies, church leadership and spiritual formation, pastoral survival and burnout, inter-religious dialogue, and global crises.

Dr. McLaren has a wide variety of interests and hobbies. He is an Auburn Senior Fellow and a leader in the Convergence Network, through which he is developing an innovative training/mentoring program for pastors, church planters, and lay leaders called Convergence Leadership Project. He works closely with the Center for Progressive Renewal/Convergence, the Wild Goose Festival and the Fair Food Program‘s Faith Working Group. And, his most recent joint project is an illustrated children’s book (for all ages) called Cory and the Seventh Story. He has taught English, helped form and served as the founding pastor for a nondenominational church, assisted in the development of several other new churches, appeared as a guest for various media outlets. Dr. McLaren is married to Grace, and they have four adult children and five grandchildren. His personal interests include wildlife and ecology, fly fishing and kayaking, music and songwriting, and literature.

We are pleased to welcome back Working Class Catering from the Goodman Community Center as our lunch provider. Their program to employ at-risk teens, and to provide meals using entirely compostable packaging, lines up well with the social justice and environmentally responsible mission of FUMC.
