Event description

Description

Dr. Felice Knight, Assistant Professor at The Citadel, will speak with us about African American Women and Healthcare Disparities, Past and Present. Dr. Knight is Director of The Citadel’s Universities Studying Slavery Committee and a member of The Citadel’s Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center team. She specializes in African American History with an emphasis on slavery during the early national and antebellum periods.

She will begin with an overview of the health problems suffered by enslaved women who performed domestic duties for the all-white children and staff at the Charleston Orphan House, then segue into a brief historical overview of disparities in access to healthcare that African American women have experienced since the days of slavery through the present.

At the conclusion of her talk, she will open the meeting up for discussion -- posing a few questions for the audience to consider in relation to her talk and the realities of healthcare disparities for African American women past and present, and then opening up the floor for candid discussion and questions.

This meeting is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and you must RSVP.
