Event description

Description

Museums Sheffield holds superb examples of works by a small group of artists working in London in the early 1950s known as the “Kitchen Sink” painters. As part of a growing trend in social realism, the artists – two of whom were from Sheffield – depicted everyday scenes by painting the mundane details of life. They contributed to important debates about social and political content in British culture, anticipating the popular genre of the “Kitchen Sink drama” later seen in theatre, novels, television plays and films. Dr. Abi Shapiro, Museums Sheffield Research Curator British Art 1945 – 1975, will discuss the Kitchen Sink works on display to explore the group and their impact on British art history.
