These talks examine the stories behind the collections in the Mansion House. The talks last one hour and focus on an iconic object each month.


The Civic Seals of York

The earliest extant seal of the city of York dates from the 13th century. Discover how the city
first gained a civic seal, how seals were used and how they changed from the 13th to the
20th century.

The Sigismund Sword

Find out the story of the Sigismund sword, reputedly once owned by the Holy Roman
Emperor Sigismund in the early 1400s.
What’s the connection with Vlad the Impaler and the Order of the Dragon?
And how did the sword make its way to York?

The Mysteries of the Mace

Although decorated with the coat of arms of Charles II the city mace is not
quite what it appears to be. Uncover the origins of the mace bearers of the city of
York, examine the detailed decoration of the city mace and decode the symbols.

York's Gold Cup

This talk explores the story behind the unique 16th century gold cup
bequeathed to the city by Marmaduke Rawdon and made by the York goldsmith
Marmaduke Best.
