Description

Abstract: Although there are numerous examples of compact astronomical objects that do look like Black Holes from the outside, it is an almost certainty that these objects cannot be completely described using the classical theory of general relativity. Instead, quantum mechanics is very likely necessary for the understanding of the interior of these objects. Observationally, the fact that quantum gravity is needed to describe these objects may show up in Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of polar regions of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) where jets originate, or in attempts to understand the origin of the entropy of the universe.

Speaker George F. Chapline, LLNL.

George is an American Theoretical Physicist based at LLNL. He is a graduate of Caltech and UCLA. His most recent interests have mainly been in quantum information theory, condensed matter, and quantum gravity. In 2003 he receive the Computing Anticipatory Systems award for a new interpretation of quantum mechanics and Helmholtz machines. He was awarded the E.O. Lawrence Award in 1982 by the US Department of Energy for leading the team that first demonstrated a working X-Ray laser.
