UCLA TDG Lunch-N-Learn Seminar Series
for UCLA Faculty & Postdoc Entrepreneurs
Date: May 04, 2017
Time: 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Location: CNSI at UCLA - 5th Floor Presentation Room
Topic: "Preclinical and Clinical Research in a CRO Setting"
Speaker(s): Brian Diethorn, PMI and Rebecca McMillian, INC Research
Brian began his career in the biomedical research field in 1998 at the University of Pittsburgh as a research technician. It was here that he acquired his technical skills including pre-operative, operative and post-operative care on a variety of animal species. He held similar roles at the University of Washington and Sierra Biomedical.
Brian made his transition from technician to leadership when he successfully executed his role as Animal Facility Manager at Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute. There he was crucial in setting up the facility, creating SOPs, ensuring NIH and USDA guidelines were met and subsequently led the facility to a clean USDA inspection.
In 2006 Brian managed the animal facility at PDL Biopharma where he developed additional critical leadership skills and shortly thereafter took a position at Harvard Medical School. At Harvard, he led the training department, developing training programs and traveling to various campuses hosting didactic and hands on training sessions.
Though he enjoyed the four seasons that Boston offered, Brian returned to sunny California to begin his career PMI. The position he applied for was already filled, but recognizing his talents, PMI decided to add a position to bring him into the organization. Over the 6 years spent at PMI, he excelled at a number of positions including Project Manager, Manager of Business Development and Director of Client Services. Eventually, Brian assumed his current position as Chief Operating Officer.
Rebecca McMillian - Rebecca McMillian, Vice President, Clinical Development, Medical Devices has more than 30 years of experience in clinical research and development within pharmaceutical/device companies and CROs. Rebecca has held global leadership positions in pharma, device and CROs, overseeing all operational aspects of clinical development strategy and delivery across all phases of clinical research. From 2005 to 2015, Rebecca led clinical operations teams for the delivery of regulatory required studies conducted globally for Allergan, a midsize pharma/device company. During that time, Rebecca was responsible for global strategy and operational delivery of all aspects of clinical programs for device programs. These programs have led to the successful marketing authorizations in facial fillers, bariatric devices, breast implants, anti-infectives, Ophthalmology, Neurology, Dermatology (including BOTOX) and Urology. Rebecca has also led numerous successful MHRA/EMA, PMDA and FDA “for cause” sponsor inspections with no major findings. Rebecca currently heads up medical device clinical study delivery for INC Research, based out of the Irvine, CA office.
