Lunch & Learn webinar: The trap of gendered design & how to overcome it
Event Information
About this Event
While there is no gender specific design for some products (i.e. phones), there is an unnecessary one for others (i.e. rasers). This leads to an interesting paradox in the design domain, where women buy or influence most of all consumer purchases, but most of product designers and engineers are men.
Today, companies spend a lot of time creating beautiful and interesting products but overlook their importance to their target consumer group or how they will actually fit into their lives. This is especially true when designing for women. Too many companies fall into the old trap of gender stereotyping their products or they’re ignoring market demand for a certain type of product altogether. When designing for women, the general rule seems to be ‘shrink it and pink it’ – something that’s far from filling the gap between women’s buying influence and the absence of women around the product development table.
How can we contribute into closing this gap? How can we include women in our design process so that we can create products that fit their individual needs? The answers to these questions are the topic of our talk.
